This bag-like creature does not have any bones and it can squeeze itself into the tiniest of openings.  If you guessed the octopus you would be correct.

The world of the octopus - There are about 200 species of octopuses in the world. The biggest is the Pacific Giant Octopus, which weighs over 100 kgs and has a tentacle span of more than seven meters. The smallest is the Atlantic Pygmy Octopus. This one is just two centimeters long.

But unlike their slow-moving cousins, the slowpoke snails, octopuses can move very fast indeed. That’s because their tentacles are covered with small suction pads, with which they cling well to clammy rocks and slippery ocean floors. These suction pads are also super-sensitive to touch and taste. An octopus’ sense of taste is 10 to 100 times more sensitive than that of a human!

Its eyes, too, are highly developed. Thus it can see clearly in dark or murky water. That equips the clever octopus to hunt at night. This clever creature lures its pray by wriggling the tip of a tentacle so that it looks like a worm.

When it is threatened, the octopus secretes an inky substance. This is meant to confuse predators, which gives it time to escape.

Most poisons produced by the octopuses are too weak to harm humans. Only the Blue-Ringed Octopus is an exception – it produces enough poison to kill a human being.  You may read more about this sea life creature at: http://www.pitara.com/discover/earth/online.asp?story=111.

If you have a three year old who might enjoy having his own octopus ImagiPLAY has a line of wooden puzzles to teach the alphabet or counting.  Count Octopus is one of their brightly colored 3d wooden puzzles to help your child learn counting numbers 1-9. Fun Wolf Facts For Your Children

posted by gbowen
January 29, 2010

The wolf is the largest member of the canine family. Gray wolves range in color from grizzled gray or black to all-white. As the ancestor of the domestic dog, the gray wolf resembles German shepherds or malamutes. Wolves are making a comeback in the Great Lakes, Northern Rockies and Southwestern United States.

Wolves like to eat Ungulates (large hoofed mammals) like elk, deer, moose and caribou. Wolves are also known to eat beaver, rabbits and other small prey. Wolves are also scavengers and often eat animals that have died due to other causes like starvation and disease.

Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals on average. Packs include the mother and father wolves, called the alphas, their pups and several other subordinate or young animals. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey, choose den sites and establish the pack’s territory. Wolves develop close relationships and strong social bonds. They often demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Wolves have a complex communication system ranging from barks and whine to growls and howls. While they don’t howl at the moon, they do howl more when it’s lighter at night, which occurs more often when the moon is full.

The most common cause of death for wolves is conflict with people over livestock losses. While wolf predation on livestock is fairly uncommon, wolves that do prey on them are often killed to protect the livestock.

We hope you enjoyed reading a few facts about the grey wolf.  You can easily find more facts and crafts by doing an online search.  And your children may love to have a grey wolf of their own.

Available online are 3d wooden puzzles from ImagiPLAY’s line of wooden kids toys. When you want quality built educational childrens toys your children will take great delight in a new wolf puzzle.

20701 Santa in Sleigh 3d wooden puzzle1939 Copywriter Robert L. May of the Montgomery Ward Company created a poem about Rudolph, the ninth reindeer.  May had been “often taunted as a child for being shy, small and slight. ” He created an ostracized reindeer with a shiny red nose who became a hero one foggy Christmas eve. Santa was part-way through deliveries when the visibility started to degenerate. Santa added Rudolph to his team of reindeer to help illuminate the path. A copy of the poem was given free to Montgomery Ward customers.

1949: Johnny Marks wrote the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Rudolph was relocated to the North Pole where he was initially rejected by the other reindeer and they wouldn’t let him play in their reindeer games because of his strange looking nose. The song was recorded by Gene Autry and became his all-time best seller.  Next to “White Christmas“  it is the most popular song of all time.

Our Santa in Sleigh is one of our popular 3d wooden puzzles manufactured by ImagiPLAY.

October 26, 2009

20701 Santa in Sleigh 3d wooden puzzleThere was a time when, as children, we were given wooden children’s toys more often than not.   We may not have appreciated the toys at the time, but with the new age of electronic gadgets we can now appreciate how simple and uncomplicated these children’s wooden toys were.

One of the reasons wooden toys are so popular, and remain so, is that anyone can play with them.  Playing with just about any wooden toy is not intimating and can be enjoyed by all age groups. Best of all children love receiving wooden puzzles and toys because they’re different.

These days DVD’s and computer games are ordinary not necessarily the best educational kids toys available.  Children’s wooden toys are something out of the ordinary. Children can’t get enough of toys that don’t beep, buzz or click.

When it’s time to buy a gift think wood.  Explore wood games, trucks, trains and 3d wooden puzzles for your child and the child in you.

In the doctor’s office, “how many people are waiting in front of us?
