Fun Summer Activities for Toddlers

posted by gbowen
April 6, 2011

Many parents concentrate on finding fun summer activities that their children can participate in while school is out. However, while there are tons of fun summer activities available for school-age children, it can be difficult to find some that toddlers can participate in.

This doesn’t mean that it isn’t important for toddlers to be involved in fun summer activities too. After all, they are still people and when they are being carted all over for their siblings’ activities, they will begin to feel less important and not understand why they don’t get to join in on the fun. Below is one suggestion for a fun summer activity that toddlers can participate in.

Gymnastics: One of the most universal activities for toddlers is gymnastics. This is because gymnastics provides toddlers with a constructive way to burn off the extra energy they have while improving their socialization and coordination skills. They will also become more aware of their body and increase their physical fitness levels. While gymnastics is available for children all year, it’s one of the fun summer activities that your toddler is sure to enjoy!

**All kids love to climb and our adventure playsets and Quadro indoor/outdoor play structures are just want your kids need. Whether you are looking for a kit that can be made into an airplane, go cart, car or many other vehicles or a large climbing structure for you large playroom or backyard Quadro toys are available at our website, All I Can Imagine.  Take a peek and you will see what we mean!

Busy Preschoolers

posted by gbowen
November 8, 2010

Both indoors and outdoors the preschool years are oft times referred to as the “play years”.  This is true because children of this age spend a lot of time running, chasing, galloping, balancing and climbing.

Several popular indoor activities include painting, building, stringing beads, and cutting with child safe scissors.  They also enjoy age appropriate puzzles and coloring with crayons.

Immensely improved since they were toddlers are their large and small motor skills.  Motor activities that are impossible for toddlers include balancing on a seesaw, hanging upside-down from a climber playset, or jumping over canals in the sand.  Preschoolers owe much of their agility to their lower center of gravity. The lower center of gravity provides a firmer foundation for balance and movement.

This ability for balance and movement allows preschoolers to improve both their locomotor skills and their upper body and arm skills. With the winter months upon us it is a good time to consider an indoor climbing toy such as Quadro adventure playsets from Phunzone™.

Definition:

Locomotor skills are those motor skills in which the feet move the body from one place to another. They are (roughly in order of how children learn them):

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Hopping
  • Jumping
  • Skipping
  • Galloping
  • Sliding (a sideways gallop)
  • Leaping

Phunzone play centers are designed to help children become more secure, confident and socially responsible and will help them develop balance, strength and a range of motor skills. Children’s activities on these wonderful adventure playsets are only limited by their imagination.

Check out all the available models including kits with wheels for building trucks, carts, airplanes and more.  Complete parts lists are available.  Visit our website, All I Can Imagine and let the fun begin!

Safe Climbing Fun with Quadro Playsets

Climbing Frame Safety

One of the primary benefits of owning a Quadro climbing frame from the parents perspective is the high safety standards that are maintained with these adventure playsets.  All parts in these playsets are made out of sturdy but soft plastic panels making it very difficult for children to hurt themselves.

The joining parts such as the corner frames and bolts are all made out of large plastic parts that are colorful and also big enough to make it very difficult for kids to put in their mouths and inadvertently swallow.

Quadro Climbing Flexibility

A great advantage that Quadro playsets for children have over other kids climbing frames is flexibility. When you purchase a quadro kit you receive a series of panels and parts that you, or preferably your kids, are supposed to construct. However, quadro kits come in such a way that there are several different variations available to your children to construct. This means when they get bored of one design they can simply dismantle it and start over building a new frame.

While some parents may be hesitant due to that fact that this is time consuming, on the contrary, one of the things kids love best about these kits is that they are fun and easy to dismantle and rebuild.

Our website shows five different kits as well as a special Vehicle Kit. Great for  home, preschools and anywhere you need safe outdoor fun play for several children.  Safe for indoor or outdoor use.

Are we Letting our Children Be Children?

30212 African Safari Wood Indoor Play SetHave we begun to expect too much academically from our children too soon?  Children only have up until about second grade to be children where they can play most all of the time.

Children may be expected to know certain things when entering kindergarten but let’s not forget that they can learn through play and not formal-like lessons.  This is why educational childrens toys such as adventure playsets and toy blocks are important to have in your children’s play room both at home and in their preschools.

According to Valerie Strauss in an article in the Washington Post “There is solid research on the benefits of well-designed play that teaches kids to ask questions and find their own answers”.

If you as parents see your kids playing with wooden playsets or toy blocks and think they are wasting their time, you may want to re-evaluate your opinions.  Allowing your children creative playtime and providing them with open-ended toys will automatically open up exciting teaching opportunities you probably could not plan.

Let’s lessen up on pushing so hard teaching younger kids, toddlers, and preschoolers so that we do not kill the joy of learning in our children before second grade.

Teaching Kids Outside of the Classroom

30212 African Safari Wood Indoor Play SetImportant lessons do not have to be learned in a classroom. Teaching children while they play increases their knowledge and you can all have fun while doing it together.

You could use blocks or other toys and place them in various locations in the room and discuss opposite relationships such as near and far.  Have children build tall and short towers and discuss how many more blocks it takes to make the taller tower.

Children like to slide so you can talk about up and down as they climb up and down the ladder of a slide.  Or, have running races and discuss how slow and fast are opposites.

For wonderful teaching opportunities use educational children’s toys, such as adventure playsets that include many different figures.  This is a perfect way to teach about different animals, what they eat, where they live and so forth.

An African Safari wooden playset, such as the one pictured in the post, is a great visual tool to teach about Africa and the variety of animals that are indigenous to Africa.  Children love open-ended toys such as play sets and as they use their imaginations to play you will have many teaching opportunities.

Safe Climbing Adventure Playsets for Kids

juniorparallelBecause all kids love to climb, supervised climbing activities are your best course of action.  Whether you take your kids to a park or just to your back yard make sure there are enough safety observers to go around.

When you are alert to the possibility of a falling child it is not difficult to catch them.  Taking a group of children to a playground and they will begin climbing steps, up poles and around climbing frames.  Take kids to a picnic and they will climb trees, leave them in the back yard and in no time you may find them on the garage roof or jumping from piles of stacked items nearby.

Given the fact that you are not going to be able to stop kids from climbing it is a good idea to provide them safe structures to climb on.  One such toy is modular tubes put together in various configurations depending on the age and amount of children.  Check out a Quadro Playset;  a basic design is pictured with this article.

Do You Remember the First Tree You Climbed?

posted by gbowen
October 14, 2009

100509_dart_1_hr_t320What kid does not love to climb?   I had a great tree in my front yard that my brother and I used to climb.  But my favorite was a very big tree I can still remember that was along the shore of a river not far from my house.

When we grow up and become older we are still seeking the thrill of climbing and taking up the sport by climbing rocks, deep water soloing, ice climbing and indoor rock climbing. Climbing gives us a different sense of adventure and freedom and is something we do not out grow.

But not all kids have trees to climb.  What to do is as easy as getting your kid a Quadro playset and setting it up in your back yard.  Or you could even begin with something smaller such as a set of parallel bars and set it up in your basement or play room.

Safe modular tubing pieces are in bright colors that kids love and they will gravitate to any of the adventure playsets you provide them.  Add to it as your children grow and you will have a play set that will give you more than your money’s worth and years of adventurous climbing fun for kids of many age groups.

Memories of 1940 – 1950′s Play Sets

posted by gbowen
August 1, 2009

110101-playset-indoor-play-system-main-view1In the late 1940’s and early 50’s Chicago offered children many parks to play in. One I particularly remember had a fountain and surrounding it was an area of sand to build castles and other structures.

There were also the usual swings, merry-go-rounds, climbing gyms, teeter-totters and slides with wooden rollers (some of you are now smiling).  Nowadays, with most of these parks remodeled, kids play on large modular construction systems, adventure playsets designed to last a lifetime and unharmed by any type of harsh weather.

If your child’s day care center has one of these “large-scale” modular constructions systems to play on he will able to play safely as he develops gross and fine motor skills as well as social play interaction.  The play set may even have a nice smooth slide or a ball cage to jump in.

Even though these adventure playsets may be more educational than the merry-go-rounds and teeter-totters we played on as a child we can only hope their memories will be more pain free than we experienced from sliding down wooden roller slides.
