Our Brain – The Sponge

posted by gbowen

A child’s brain is likened to a sponge and absorbs enormous amounts of a variety of information. Because the brain continues to expand as it grows it is important to expose your children to a variety of open-ended wooden kids toys.

Not only are children exposed to a variety of toddler learning toys at home, there are wooden toys in their daycare, Sunday school and waiting rooms. Where ever your children are becomes an opportunity for teaching opportunities.

You can help your children learn colors, for example, while sitting in the doctor’s office.  If you put down your magazine and observe the toddler toys available you could point out to your child a chair and say to him “this is a chair.  The color of the chair is blue”.

Quality education is most important to the mental health and growth of all young children and it is because of this that you will find it beneficial to surround your children with playsets, wood puzzles and other toys that have a variety of shapes and colors to keep your children interested in play and learning.

Your child may love playing with a Sealife puzzle playset pictured above.  Each chunky puzzle piece is it’s own creature including a sea horse, crab and turtle.  Made from splinter-proof wood this is one of our toddler learning toys is for ages 3 up.

Fun Wolf Facts For Your Children

posted by gbowen
January 29, 2010

The wolf is the largest member of the canine family. Gray wolves range in color from grizzled gray or black to all-white. As the ancestor of the domestic dog, the gray wolf resembles German shepherds or malamutes. Wolves are making a comeback in the Great Lakes, Northern Rockies and Southwestern United States.

Wolves like to eat Ungulates (large hoofed mammals) like elk, deer, moose and caribou. Wolves are also known to eat beaver, rabbits and other small prey. Wolves are also scavengers and often eat animals that have died due to other causes like starvation and disease.

Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals on average. Packs include the mother and father wolves, called the alphas, their pups and several other subordinate or young animals. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey, choose den sites and establish the pack’s territory. Wolves develop close relationships and strong social bonds. They often demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Wolves have a complex communication system ranging from barks and whine to growls and howls. While they don’t howl at the moon, they do howl more when it’s lighter at night, which occurs more often when the moon is full.

The most common cause of death for wolves is conflict with people over livestock losses. While wolf predation on livestock is fairly uncommon, wolves that do prey on them are often killed to protect the livestock.

We hope you enjoyed reading a few facts about the grey wolf.  You can easily find more facts and crafts by doing an online search.  And your children may love to have a grey wolf of their own.

Available online are 3d wooden puzzles from ImagiPLAY’s line of wooden kids toys. When you want quality built educational childrens toys your children will take great delight in a new wolf puzzle.

Fun Facts About Lions For Your Kids

posted by DonnaB
January 22, 2010

Lions consume a wide variety of prey, from wildebeest, impala, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and wild hogs to sometimes rhinos and hippos. They will also feed on smaller animals such as hares, birds and reptiles. Lions are also known to attack elephants when food is scarce.

Both male and female lions roar, and that roar can be heard over five miles away!

The lion population in Africa has been reduced by half since the early 1950s. Today, fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa.

Though lions used to live in most parts of Africa, they are now found only in the south Sahara desert and in parts of southern and eastern Africa. Historically, in addition to Africa, lions were found from Greece through the Middle East to northern India

The only social member of the cat (Felidae) family, lions live in large groups called “prides,” consisting of about 15 lions. Related females and their young make up the majority of the pride. A single male, or sometimes a small group of 2-3 males, will join a pride for an indefinite period, usually about 3 years or until another group of males takes over.

We hope you enjoyed reading about the Lion, one of our favorite animals.  And, if you have children two and up you may be interested in a wonderful wooden kids toy, our Safari Stacking Blocks (pictured above). Buying open ended educational childrens toys will open up many teaching opportunities as your children play, learn and increase their self-esteem.

What to Look for in a Wooden Toy

posted by gbowen

40502 Bird RattleChoosing natural wooden kids toys will help protect your children’s health.  When you keep your children away from toxics you may even be saving their lives.

If you have woodworking skills you could make your own toys from reclaimed materials; this is great for your wallet.  However, not all of us are talented in this area and will have to shop for store-bought wooden children’s toys.

When you purchase wooden baby rattles and wooden baby toys made from durable materials you will be purchasing kids toy that can be passed down from child to child.

Purchase “good wood”.  Choose toys made from sustainably logged wood that is painted with vegetable, water-based, or beeswax finishes. You will be helping our Earth when you avoid toxic materials.

Natural wood toys are biodegradable, for one thing, so, unlike plastics, they won’t be sitting in our landfills for thousands of years.  The image with this article is a wood baby rattle by ImagiPLAY and is coated with beeswax.

40501 Elephant RattleWhen you browse through the wooden children’s toys on the store shelves and you will find most toys are made with toxic materials. Natural toys, on the other hand, are made from materials that are safe for the child and the environment.

Children are known to put toys in their mouths yet manufactures continue saturating the marketplace with children’s toys made with toxic materials. It up to us to read the labels and do our research in order to provide our children safe wooden kids toys.

Wooden baby toys can be one of your child’s first connections to nature. A wooden baby rattle in a child’s hand comes from a living tree and feels familiar and nurturing in a way that man-made materials can’t match.

As your child grows you will want to continue purchasing as many wooden kids toys as your budget will allow.  These natural toys will protect your child’s health as well as our environment.
